Tucson, Arizona (May 18, 2005) Services provided to the community by local Public Works Departments will be highlighted at the Thursday, May 25th free Public Works Day Celebration. City of Tucson, Town of Marana, City of South Tucson, Pima Association of Governments, Pima County, Arizona Department of Transportation, and the American Public Works Association (APWA) will all be present at the Jácome Plaza on the grounds of the downtown Joel Valdez Main Library from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Representatives from each governmental agency will be present for the reading of the Public Works Day Proclamation at noon. The American Public Works Association has proclaimed May 21 – 27, 2006 as National Public Works Week to recognize the people who devote their professional time and energy to public works, making communities better and safer places to live.

Services such as transportation, wastewater management, natural resources, parks, recreation, water services, recycling, air quality monitoring, fleet management, graphic services, solid waste management, environmental quality, flood control, development services will be represented. These and other programs will be the focus of the tables and displays set up along the tree-lined plaza just south of the library. In addition, some of the heavy duty vehicles used to provide these services will be parked along Pennington Street and Church Avenue, so the public can talk with staff and get an up close and personal view of the equipment that is critical for 24/7 service to the community.

“This event will highlight the behind the scenes heroes that help to maintain our daily quality of life throughout eastern Pima County,” said Jim Glock, local APWA chapter president and Director of the City of Tucson Department of Transportation. “Public works employees are part of the first response team in times of natural or man-made disasters, and this is a great opportunity to see the equipment they use and recognize the efforts of these unheralded heroes that keep our services running smoothly,” Glock continued. For more information on this celebration call (520) 740-6410 or 740-3343.
